Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • What are the required qualifications of accepted tutors?
All tutors have successfully cleared a district-issued background and criminal history check prior to receiving a tutor assignment and completed state-mandated reporter training. Additionally, tutors are required to attend an in-person, interactive orientation session to overview tutoring materials approved by the CCSD office, session guidelines, age-specific tips for engagement and learning, required dress code, and communication rules.
  • What is EEA's status with Clarke County School District?
Equal Education for Athens is an official 2023 community partner with Clarke County School District. The organization is constantly working to expand its direct partnership with public and private schools within the district, in order to ensure that every child receives equitable access to the education they deserve! If you are interested in becoming a school partner with EEA, please email us at equaleducationathens@gmail.com
  • How long does it take to become a tutor?
While the timeline does vary, our tip is to follow the tutor onboarding guidelines to a tee. It is imperative that you submit your correctly signed backgorund check alongside your interest form submission as soon as possible, as it may take up to 3 weeks for you to receive clearance. From there, you are able to complete your mandatory report training certification and attend orientation while you await clearance. As always, you are always welcome to email tutors.eea@gmail.com with any questions regarding your status in onboarding.
  • How long will it take to get my background check cleared?
We submit background checks to the district every two weeks and their turnaround time is about a week.
  • Why is the tutor log important?
The tutor log is how we keep track of the hours that you've tutored and conveniently gather them if you need a list of your service hours. It is important to submit the tutor log form after each tutoring session to ensure you get all of the correct hours.
  • How long and frequent are tutoring sessions?
Tutors are instructed to conduct weekly, 45-minute virtual tutoring sessions in order to maximize student learning while avoiding zoom burnout.
  • Why virtual tutoring sessions?
The COVID-19 pandemic exposed the deep inequalities that have existed for too long within our education system. Going virtual allows us to eliminate the physical barriers (e.g. location, transportation) that widen the gap in resources available to marginalized populations within CCSD. Virtual tutoring also allows for a quick, seamless introduction into the program with few clicks on our website.
  • What tutoring subjects are offered?
We currently offer free tutoring in reading, mathematics, science, social studies, Spanish, AP classes, SAT and ACT testing, and college readiness prep. We hope to increase and further diversify our subjects offered! We are open to all suggestions on how to expand our program! Please feel free to reach out to us at equaleducationathens@gmail.com and someone from our team will be in touch shortly.
  • How are students matched with a tutor?
Students, parents, and tutors are asked to record information regarding their preferred meeting time, subject(s), and native language. Our education team works diligently to ensure all pairings are matched based on all the information we have at our disposal.
